THE 30TH GIRO ROSA IS PARTIALLY UNVEILED

The edition 2019 of the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile Elite – Giro Rosa, start to have a shape, as the first and the last two stages have been presented this morning in Udine. Various authorities took part at the presentation, including the Major of Udine, On. Pietro Fontanini, the Regional Assessor for Tourism and the Productive Activities Sergio Emidio Bini, the representatives of the Host Cities, Elena Cecchini, 3 times Italian National Champion and Gold Medal in the Team Time Trial at the Innsbruck 2018 Road World Championships, leads the group of the athletes from Italy, and the BTC CITY Ljubljana Cycling Team from the near Slovenia, with the Team Manager Gorazd Penko with some athletes of the roster. Special guest has been the Football Trainer Edy Reja, who comes from Friuli, former coach of important football teams like Napoli.

The 30th Edition of the Giro Rosa, directed by Giuseppe Rivolta, will start in Piedmont on the 5th July with a hilly Team Time Trial of 18 kms between Cassano Spinola and Castellania, hometown of the Legendary “Campionissimo” Fausto Coppi, who was born in 1919, a hundred years ago. Like in 2018 with the historical stage finishes on the Monte Zoncolan and in Cividale, Friuli will be the final judge: Maniago, host city of the recent Paracycling Road World Championships, will be the finish of the Stage 8. The day after, there will be the Gemona del Friuli – Chiusaforte (Malga Montasio): 125.4 kms with uphill finish at 1544 meters, a very hard climb (highest slope 20%, average 8.1%) which was in the route of the Men Giro d’Italia 2013. The stage 10 will be raced between San Vito al Tagliamento and Udine for 118.6 kms and the final, short, cobblestoned climb of the Castle of Udine, which will assigne the final Maglia Rosa and the trophee of the 30th Giro Rosa.

THE GIRO ROSA GOES TO ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN

The Olympic and European Champion 2016 from Holland, is the overall winner of the 2017 edition. making the “double” since her 2015 triumph in San Domenico di Varzo (Verbania).

Elisa Longo Borghini and Annemiek Van Vleuten (winner of the Green and Cyclamine Jersey), tried an attack on the climb of Vesuvio but it has been useless. The three athletes have been reached by the chasing group on the following descend to Torre del Greco, and Megan Guarnier (1st), Amanda Spratt (2nd) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (3rd) took the final stage podium.

Born in Zwolle in 1990, Anna Van der Breggen is one of the biggest protagonists of the 2017 season. With the Olympic and European title 2016, she could take an historical triumph in Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege – Bastogne – Liege in April. With the Giro Rosa win, she is the new leader of the Women’s World Tour.

Elisa Longo Borghini won the Blue Jersey as best Italian (2nd overall), the Danish Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig is the best young (White Jersey) and Annemiek Van Vleuten (3rd place in the GC and stage winner in Montereale Valcellina and Sant’Elpidio a Mare) won the Green and Cyclamine Jersey.

IL GIRO ROSA E’ DI ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN

La campionessa olandese, già campionessa olimpica ed Europea in carica, è la trionfatrice finale dell’edizione 2017, riuscendo a bissare il successo ottenuto due anni fa nel tappone di San Domenico di Varzo (Verbania).

A nulla è valso il tentativo di attacco sulla salita del Vesuvio da parte di Elisa Longo Borghini ed Annemiek Van Vleuten, quest’ultima vincitrice sia della classifica a punti che della classifica dei GPM: sulla successiva discesa verso il traguardo di Torre del Greco il terzetto è stato raggiunto da un successivo gruppetto comprendente Megan Guarnier, Amanda Spratt e Kasia Niewiadoma, che in quest’ordine hanno portato a casa il podio nella tappa finale.

Nativa di Zwolle e classe 1990, Anna Van der Breggen è una delle grandi protagoniste della Stagione 2017: con il titolo Olimpico e quello Europeo conquistati nel 2016, ha già trionfato ad aprile nell’Amstel Gold Race, alla Freccia Vallone e alla Liegi – Bastogne – Liegi. Col successo al Giro Rosa, la olandese supera Katarzyna Niewiadoma nella classifica del Women’s World Tour.

Nelle altre speciali classifiche Elisa Longo Borghini è la migliore italiana, grazie anche al secondo posto in classifica generale. La Maglia Bianca delle giovani è finita sulle spalle della danese Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Cervelo – Bigla), mentre classifica a punti e dei GPM vanno ad Annemiek Van Vleuten (Orica – Scott), terza assoluta e prima classificata nelle tappe di Montereale Valcellina e Sant’Elpidio a Mare.

MARTA BASTIANELLI TAKES THE FIRST ITALIAN WIN AT GIRO ROSA IN POLLA

The World Champion of Stuttgart 2007 is the first stage winner for Italy of the 28th Giro Rosa: The athlete of Alè Cipollini – Galassia Team has triumphed in the penultimate stage (Palinuro – Polla, 122 km) beating the Finnish Lotta Lepistö (Cervelo Bigla Pro Cycling Team) and Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle High5).

A very hot and sunny weather through the roads of Cilento and Vallo di Diano was with the race, the last day in the Province of Salerno. A small group went in the front in the first part, including the three times Italian Champion Elena Cecchini, but the Pink Jersey peloton could take them before the Cathegorized climb of Sala Consilina. Three riders attack here: Malgorzata Jasinska (Cylance Pro Cycling), Lauren Kitchen (WM3) and Anna Trevisi (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia), who have more than a minute at the first passage from Polla. The peloton accelerate until catching the breakaway at the last kilometer: the Team Alè – Cipollini – Galassia does a perfect work and Marta Bastianelli took the win, with Lepistö (first place in Roseto degli Abruzzi) and Giorgia Bronzini. Marta is back on the podium of the Giro after Legnano 2016. Anna Van der Breggen, who has been reached by her family in Polla, keeps the Pink Jersey with 1’03” from Elisa Longo Borghini and 1’39” from Annemiek Van Vleuten: the Vesuvius will be the decisive climb tomorrow in the final stage of Torre del Greco.

A POLLA LA PRIMA GIOIA ITALIANA CON MARTA BASTIANELLI

Arriva grazie a un imperioso sprint il primo e atteso successo Azzurro al Giro Rosa 2017: Marta Bastianelli (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia), già campionessa mondiale nel 2007 a Stoccarda, ha trionfato nella nona e penultima tappa (Palinuro – Polla, 122 km), davanti alla finlandese Lotta Lepistö (Cervelo Bigla Pro Cycling Team) e a Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle High5).

Caldo torrido sulle strade che dal Cilento hanno portato al Vallo di Diano, per l’ultima tappa in Provincia di Salerno: nella prima parte si avvantaggia un gruppetto che includeva anche la tre volte campionessa d’Italia Elena Cecchini, ripreso nei pressi del GPM di Sala Consilina: qui scatta un terzetto che include Malgorzata Jasinska (Cylance Pro Cycling), Lauren Kitchen (WM3) e Anna Trevisi (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia), che al primo passaggio da Polla ha oltre un minuto di vantaggio. Nei 21 chilometri rimanenti il gruppo compie una brusca accelerazione guadagnando secondi su secondi, riprendendo le tre proprio all’ultimo chilometro: l’Alè – Cipollini – Galassia lavora perfettamente e Marta Bastianelli rifinisce il tutto andando a vincere su Lepistö (prima sul traguardo di Roseto degli Abruzzi) e Giorgia Bronzini, tornando sul podio dopo la tappa di Legnano 2016. A una tappa dal termine Anna Van der Breggen, raggiunta dalla sua famiglia a Polla, mantiene la Maglia Rosa con 1’03” su Longo Borghini e 1’39” su Van Vleuten: decisivo sarà il Vesuvio nella frazione conclusiva di domani a Torre del Greco.

HANNAH BARNES, THE ENGLISH FLASH OF SAN VENDEMIANO

Faster than a F1 car (she has shortly lived near the Silverstone Circuit) the Canyon SRAM rider has won the Stage 3 of Giro Rosa 2017 (San Fior – San Vendemiano, 100 kms) beating the Finnish Lotta Lepistö (Cervelo Bigla) and Kirsten Wild (Cylance Pro Cycling).

This has been an eventful stage: the Colombian Sanabria Sanchez (Servetto Giusta Alurecycling) did a solo breakaway just before the first passage on the finish line of San Vendemiano, resisting until the beginning of Cà del Poggio cathegorized climb.), won by Annemiek Van Vleuten.  The Dutch of Orica – Scott, who took the win yesterday, tried an attack with seven fighters for the GC but the peloton took them from behind. Elena Cecchini wants a solo win, she could be in the front for more than 10 kilometers but the teams of the sprinters did a “brutal” acceleration with the goal of a bunch sprint. Also Clemilda Fernandes (Servetto Giusta Alurecycling) and Iraida Garcia Ocasio (S.C. Michela Fanini) tried an attack, the bunch is faster and the sprint is here: Chloe Hosking seems the strongest but Hannah Barnes is the first on the finish line. It is the first victory for the born in Kent (England) rider. Nothing changed in the GC, as Anna Van der Breggen keeps the Maglia Rosa on her shoulders, Annemiek Van Vleuten is second and Elisa Longo Borghini.

Tomorrow there is the stage 4, with start and finish in Occhiobello (Rovigo).

HANNAH BARNES, FRECCIA INGLESE A SAN VENDEMIANO

Più veloce di una Formula Uno (ha vissuto anche per un breve periodo nei pressi del circuito automobilistico di Silverstone), la portacolori del Team Canyon SRAM ha vinto la terza tappa del Giro Rosa 2017 (San Fior – San Vendemiano, 100 km) davanti alla finlandese Lotta Lepistö (Cervelo Bigla) e Kirsten Wild (Cylance Pro Cycling).

La tappa è risultata molto movimentata, come da pronostico: al primo passaggio da San Vendemiano se ne va la colombiana Sanabria Sanchez (Servetto Giusta Alurecycling), resistendo fino all’inizio della salita di Cà del Poggio (2° cat.), su cui passa al comando la vincitrice di ieri Annemiek Van Vleuten. L’olandese della Orica – Scott prova ad attaccare in discesa con altre sette atlete di classifica, il gruppo ritorna su di loro da dietro. Ecco che sale in cattedra poi Elena Cecchini, che ci prova con un tentativo di fuga solitaria durato poco più di dieci chilometri a causa della brutale risposta dei teams delle velociste, che iniziano a prepararsi alla volata. Clemilda Fernandes (Servetto Giusta Alurecycling) e Iraida Garcia Ocasio (S.C. Michela Fanini) azzardano uno scatto, anch’esso respinto. La volata è ormai certa, con Chloe Hosking che passa davanti ai -250 metri, ma è Hannah Barnes a superare le avversarie sotto la linea di arrivo. Per la inglese nata nel Kent è il primo successo al Giro Rosa, mentre rimane invariata la Classifica Generale, che vede Anna Van der Breggen in Maglia Rosa, seguita da Van Vleuten ed Elisa Longo Borghini.

Domani è in programma la quarta tappa, con partenza e arrivo a Occhiobello (Rovigo).

Giro Rosa 2017, this is the Official Route

GIRO ROSA 2017, THIS IS THE OFFICIAL ROUTE

The race has been presented this morning at the Car Show Room System Cars in Meda (Monza e Brianza) the edition 28 of the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile Elite, which will take place from 29th June to 9th July and is valid as a Women’s World Tour Race.

In a very full room (about 500 invited people participated), the curiosity about the new route of the Giro was extremely high, as the Director Giuseppe Rivolta admitted with his brilliant organizing team. Ambrogio Romanò, amateur cyclist and owner of the Ssangyong Showroom System Cars welcomed everybody launching the event as car supplier of the race. “Cycling is my sporting biggest passion and it’s a honour for my family and my company to host an event like this, the presentation of the most important women’s cycling race.”

RAI will be the Official Television of the Giro Rosa: the ten stages will be commented by Stefano Rizzato on Raidue.

Paolo Sangalli, as collaborator of the Italian Nationa Coach of the women teams, commented: “I like this Giro, it hugs Italy from north to south. The riders will fight very much.”

The Director Giuseppe Rivolta presented the ten stages: the route begins with the Team Time Trial from Aquileia to Grado (11.5 kms), which was already officialized. The Stage 2 is still in Friuli, from Zoppola (PN) to Montereale Valcellina (PN), then Veneto hosts the next two stages (San Fior – San Vendemiano and Occhiobello – Occhiobello, with this one which has been named as DeltaPo OutletFamily Stage).  One of the hardest days will be in the Region Marche, where the very tough Individual Time Trial in Sant’Elpidio a Mare will take place and it includes two short but very hard climbs. The sprinters will fight in the next day in Roseto degli Abruzzi but the next stages Isernia – Baronissi and Baronissi – Palinuro include tough climbs which are close to each finish line and have a long distance of more than 140 kilometers. Polla hosts the penultimate stage finish after 122 interesting kilometers but it’s Torre del Greco with the Vesuvio to decide who will wear the definitive Pink Jersey.

Some of the athletes who will race the Giro, like the sprinter Barbara Guarischi (winner in 2015 in Lubiana), the former Junior European Champion Anna Trevisi and the bronze medal of Tuscany 2013 World Championships Rossella Ratto.

Some of the strongest, former cyclists like Djamolidine Abdujaparov from Uzbekistan, Evgenij Berzin from Russia and the Italians Claudio Chiappucci and Gilberto Simoni took part with big interest “The girls will run where we fighted some years ago. It will be very interesting to see their sporting achievements. The Giro is always a great fight” – declared “El Diablo Chiappucci at the end of the day.

MEGAN GUARNIER WINS THE GIRO ROSA 2016

The US National Champion got the absolute victory in the biggest Cycling Stage for Women, the second athlete from the United States after Mara Abbott in 2010 and 2013. Born in Glen Falls on 4th May 1985, last year she has won the Strade Bianche, and she finished third the Giro and the World Championships in Richmond. The Giro Rosa 2016 has been her most important goal of the season and now she is taking a look to the Olympic Race of Rio, where she wants to win a medal.

In this Giro Megan Guarnier has been one of the most constant of the favorites: race leader in San Fior after the first stage, she had to give the leadership the day after in Montenars. In the very hot and tough stage in Alassio/Madonna della Guardia she could be back in Pink. Second place for Evelyn Stevens at 34” and third is Anna Van der Breggen at 1’53”. The final stage in Verbania has been won by Thalita De Jong (Rabo-Liv), Cyclocross World Champion 2016. Second was Riejanne Markus (Liv-Plantur) and third Maria Giulia Confalonieri again on the podium after Lovere (2°) and Legnano (3°)

La campionessa nazionale degli Stati Uniti porta a casa il successo assoluto nella grande corsa a tappe femminile, la più prestigiosa al mondo, e diventa la seconda atleta del suo Paese ad aver vinto il Giro Rosa, dopo i due successi di Mara Abbott nel 2010 e nel 2013. Nata a Glens Falls il 4 maggio 1985, l’anno scorso si è piazzata terza dopo essere stata diversi giorni in Maglia Rosa, ha vinto la Strade Bianche e successivamente ha conquistato il bronzo assoluto ai Mondiali di Richmond. Il Giro Rosa 2016 è stato l’appuntamento più importante della sua stagione e ora gli occhi sono puntati verso Rio dove avrà come obiettivo una medaglia olimpica.

In questo Giro Megan Guarnier è stata tra le più costanti delle atlete di testa: già in Rosa a San Fior quando vinse Giorgia Bronzini, ha dovuto cedere il primato il giorno dopo a Montenars, riprendendolo durante la caldissima e durissima tappa di Alassio/Madonna della Guardia. Alle sue spalle si sono classificate la compagna di squadra Stevens a 34” e la olandese Anna Van der Breggen a 1’53”. Per la cronaca l’ultima tappa Verbania -Verbania è stata vinta dalla campionessa del mondo in carica di ciclocross Thalita De Jong al termine di una fuga. Secondo posto per la connazionale Riejanne Markus (Liv-Plantur) con Maria Giulia Confalonieri, ancora sul podio dopo Lovere (2°) e Legnano (3°)
