THE PODIUM IN LEGNANO IS 100% ITALIAN

Bronzini – Bastianelli – Confalonieri: the “Tricolore” flag shines at the finish line in Legnano, at the end of a frightening stage.
The 97.550 km of the stage started in Rescaldina were mostly on the roads of the Coppa Bernocchi were run at high speed, with a breakaway that included Alena Amialiusik (Canyon-SRAM), Anna Ceoloni (Servetto-Footon-Alurecycling), Rozanne Slik (Liv-Plantur), Audrey Cordon (Wiggle High5), Malgorzata Jasinska (Alè-Cipollini), Lex Albrecht (BePink) and Ana Maria Covrig (Inpa-Bianchi), with the National Champion of Romania who passed first on the climb of Gornate Superiore (Category 3). THE USA DOMINATE THE CLIMB OF MADONNA DELLA GUARDIA

Evelyn Stevens takes the victory after a spectacular stage with uphill finish in Alassio/Madonna della Guardia, with her compatriot Megan Guarnier who is back wearing the Pink Jersey

It has been a very emotional stage: Katarzyna Niewiadoma tried a solo breakaway in the first phase, characterized by the climbs of Passo del Ginestro, Colle di Nava and Passo Caprauna. Here Mara Abbott went to catch the escapist of Rabo-Liv Team together with Evelyn Stevens, forming a top-level trio. The first 8 chasers, included Guderzo and Cecchini, accelerated in the downhill and catched the head of the race before Albenga (Intermediate Sprint). Cecchini had troubles but could be back in the front before the start of the climb. Here Abbott forced the rhythm,  and tried to attack twice: only Van der Breggen, Stevens, Lichtenberg and Tatiana Guderzo resisted, but the Italians must give up in the last 2 kilometers. At 1.5 kms to go, Stevens makes the decisive attack, Abbott gave up this permitted to the American of Boels Dolmans to take the victory, the second in her Giro Rosa, in another uphill finish. Megan Guarnier came second 6” later and becomes the new Race Leader with three stages to go and the Individual Time Trial in Varazze tomorrow which should give an unofficial idea about the final General Classification. At the moment the GC podium is 100 made in USA, with Guarnier, Abbott and Stevens.

Evelyn Stevens said: “That’s a splendid sensation, I didn’t expect to win two stages in such a race and I’ve done it in the two uphill finishes. I am really happy, Megan got the Pink Jersey and it’s amazing. I dedicate this victory to our teammate Karol-Ann Canuel who did a splendid job”.

THE MORTIROLO CROWNS MARA ABBOTT!

The hardest climb of this Giro Rosa has been dominated by the American champion, already winner of two editions in her great career.

Mara Abbott has been phenomenal on the hard slopes of the Mortirolo, 12 kilometers at 10.8% with a maximal slope of 18%. Only the English grimpeur Emma Pooley tried to stay with the attacker but it hasn’t been possible. In the Maglia Rosa Group remained Van der Breggen, Lichtenberg, Stevens, Guarnier, Longo Borghini and Tuhai, with Vysostka and Schweizer catching this small peloton after the top of the climb. In the downhill Mara Abbott crashed and Tatiana Guderzo is also back tìin the Maglia Rosa group. Emma Pooley has troubles in the downhill and couldn’t stay with the main peloton, same as the Pink Jersey Evelyn Stevens. Mara Abbott is the new race leader, and Elisa Longo Borghini makes the double for Wiggle High5 Team winning the sprint of the chasers. Tatiana Guderzo is in third place.

Declarations of Mara Abbott: “It has been a crazy stage, as for its difficulty as for my troubles due to a crash in the downhill. But I’m happy to be the new Pink Jersey and this is important”. Mara did the Mortirolo in 51’44”!

Declarations of Elisa Longo Borghini: “It’s a big moment for our team, we are doing a great job in this Giro Rosa. Mara said “bye” to us in the climb of Mortirolo, then Lichtenberg took a tremendous rhythm in the downhill, but I am happy to have won the final sprint of the chasers. Go further!”.

SPRINT MADE IN AUSTRALIA, CROMWELL IS THE QUEEN IN LOVERE

The australian sprinter, who will have her 28th birthday tomorrow, has won the fourth stage of the Giro Rosa 2016 in a very fast sprint (62.447 km/h the average speed!) beating Maria Giulia Confalonieri (Lensworld – Zannata) and the French Aude Biannic (Poitou-Charentes Futuroscope 86).

It has been a fast stage: after the stage start in Costa Volpino, the race turned to the climb of Pianico (3. Category KOM), won by the Hungarian National Champion Monika Kiraly (S.C. Michela Fanini), with Elisa Longo Borghini in second place. The following route was slower, with shy attacks. The peloton guided by Boels Dolmans controlled with particular attention. After Sarnico, the speed improved much, especially from the Intermediate Sprint in Sale Marasino won by Megan Guarnier, and the teams of the main sprinters started to work. Canyon-SRAM had a top-level train comprehending the Italians Elena Cecchini and Barbara Guarischi, with Tiffany Cromwell winning the final sprint in Lovere, arriving at over 60 km/h of average speed in the final kilometer. This has been the second victory in a row for Australia in this Giro, after Chloe Hosking yesterday in Lendinara.

“It was amazing – declared Cromwell at the end of the stage – I thought I started my sprint too early but the team has put me in the best place at the best time. I have made the best birthday present to myself for tomorrow”.

Satisfaction for Maria Giulia Confalonieri, who, with her second place of today, has catched her best placement in her career at the Giro Rosa: “I’m very happy, the final phase was really fast, maybe I’ve waited too much and I had to ride slower. The Canyon train was very, but I am happy”.

Nothing changes in the General Classification, leads for the third day in a row by Evelyn Stevens. Second remains Katarzyna Niewiadoma, third is Megan Guarnier. From tomorrow there are the highest mountains: the stage Grosio – Tirano, 77.5 km, has the mythical Passo del Mortirolo, from the classic side of Mazzo di Valtellina.

RAI has totalized an audience of 8.86% with a top of 1 million viewers on tv for the stage of yesterday Montagnana – Lendinara.

FIRST VICTORY FOR CHLOE HOSKING AT THE GIRO ROSA

The Austrialian sprinter of Team Wiggle High5 has obtained her first personal success at the Giro Rosa, winning the Stage 3 Montagnana-Lendinara, 114 km (The stage has become 6 km shorter than the original). This has been a stage where the bunch did not permit attempts of breakaways. The athletes have been supported by a huge crowd of fans since the marvellous start in Montagnana. At half stage, with the climb of Arquà Petrarca (3rd Category) won by Elisa Longo Borghini and the Intermediate Sprint gone to Megan Guarnier in Ciclamino Jersey, the athletes started to accelerate. At 30 kms to go, the Italian Silvia Valsecchi (BePink) tried an attack but the group ran too fat. Closer to the finish line Scott Lechuga attacked reaching 22” gap, with the Champion of Azerbaigian Olena Pavlukhina (BTC CIty Ljubljana) chasing. The teams of the sprinters worked for their captains and the stage has been decided with a bunch sprint: the train of Wiggle High5 bring Chloe Hosking and Giorgia Bronzini in the best position, and the Aussie catched a very precious success, the second for its team, after Giorgia Bronzini in San Fior. Second place for Marta Tagliaferro (Alè-Cipollini).

“It was unexpected for me, I’m shocked!” – admits Chloe Hosking after the stage – “I really don’t like the narrow curves close to the finish but the team did a great work and I must thank my teammates”.

Nothing changes in the General Classification: Evelyn Stevens (Boels Dolmans) from USA is the Pink Jersey with 3” from Kasia Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv) and 16” from Megan Guarnier.

The route of tomorrow’s stage, Costa Volpino – Lovere has been modified due to a landslide on the west coast of the Lake of Iseo: the new itinerary has a climb in Pianico after only 3 kms from the start, the following passage from Val Cavallina until Trescore Balneario and Gorlago, going up to the Lake of Iseo from Sarnico to Pisogne, through the Intermediate Sprint in Sale Marasino. The stage has been run quietly until the first climb to Montenars, but other “fights” have been seen for the two intermediate sprints in Peonis (Special Price dedicated toOttavio Bottecchia) and Buja, won respectively by the local idol Elena Cecchini and her teammate Alena Amialiusik (Canyon – SRAM). Cecchini, awarded at the start in Tarcento, tried to attack with a small group descending to Artegna before the final climb but she has been reached lately. The group reached Tagliaferro before the climb in Sarmede: here Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5) attacked to pass first on the top of the KOM. The italian athlete was reached by Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv), Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) and Evelyn Stevens (Boels-Dolmans). GIRO ROSA 2016, A HARD ROUTE WITH A VIEW TO RIO

The 27th edition of the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile Elite, part of the new Women’s World Tour has been unveiled this morning at the Auditorium of Colnago Factory in Cambiago (Milan).
Ernesto Colnago, owner of the event location and main sponsor of the Pink and White Jersey, has welcomed the big crowd who came to participate. The Race Director Giuseppe Rivolta has thanked everybody describing his own emotions of building this route, described stage by stage by the Italian Cycling National Coach Edoardo Salvoldi.

Numerous athletes have come to discover personally the new route: Elisa Longo Borghini (Blue Jersey 2014-2015), the Japanese National Champion Mayuko Hagiwara (Stage winner in Morbegno last year), the three riders of Top Girls Fassa Bortolo Asja Paladin, Soraya Paladin and Irene Bitto, accompained by the Team Manager Lucio Rigato; from Canyon – SRAM Team Barbara Guarischi (winner in Ljubljana – BTC City) and Elena Cecchini (Italian National Champion), finally the Bronze Medal in Florence 2013 Rossella Ratto.

The edition n°27 begins with a prologue in the evening of the 1st July 2016 in Gaiarine, near Treviso. In the same territory there will be the first stage, with finish in San Fior di Sotto, before being in Friuli to remember the victims of the earthquake of 40 years ago. The sprinters will fight to win the next flat stage in Lendinara passing on the Colli Euganei finishing close to the Po River. The Central part of the edition will take place in Lombardy, first with the Tour of the Iseo Lake (from Costa Volpino to Lovere) then the high mountain stage from Grosio to Tirano with the terrible Mortirolo as Cima Coppi. A long transfer to Liguria means that the Giro goes to its finish: the last high mountain stage with uphill finish at the Sanctuary of Madonna della Guardia in Alassio (start in Andora) and the hard individual Time Trial of Varazze. Last opportunity for the sprinters is in Legnano on Saturday 9th July on the route of the Men’s race Coppa Bernocchi, one day before the final day of Verbania where the winner will be crowned.

Edoardo Salvoldi says: “This is a perfect and complete route for the preparation to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which are planned in the first days of July”.
The athletes have as well demonstrated their enthusiasm and they have already in mind their programs: “We all want to win every stage” – says Elisa Longo Borghini – “It will be for sure a hard Giro and as well thinking about the General Classification”. Elena Cecchini agrees and adds: “I’m happy because there is a beautiful stage at my homeplace, I do training on these roads and I’d love to win it, the goal is to conquer a place for the Olympic Games. We have a strong team and we will see which roles we will have.”

Renato Di Rocco, President of the Italian Cycling Federation declared the successful two Women’s World Tour races in Italy, won by the World Champion Elizabeth Armitstead: “A big crowd came to see the women races, and the World Champion has declared that winning in Italy with the Rainbow Jersey is a sensation that you feel nowhere else.”

RAI will broadcast the Giro Rosa on RAITRE right after the Live of the Tour de France, with the highlights commented by Piergiorgio Severini.
